MINDSCAPES AND POSTCARDS – A personal exhibition by Renzo Francabandera @ Cue Press – Bologna – 27/10 – 6/11 2022

 Ci vogliono, appunto, molti luoghi.

Renzo Francabandera's exhibition project that Cue Press hosts in its new headquarters in Bologna, was born from a research by the artist which originated over a year ago from the accidental discovery, in the streets of the city, of a small collection of postcards and some family photos, probably destined for waste, of which two different families had decided to get rid of.
A move, a change of city. We will never know, but those places, artificial, imagine yourself, totally detached from the artist's life path but casually entered it, they have become an engine for personal research, made of new and free signs, more and more broken up and fragmented, until they become imagined places of lost memories, seen perhaps from above, whose distance transforms them into new panoramas, signs with an abstract effect.

We live in the landscape, his words are endless.

In a short time those unknown environments have become an imagined landscape, formal at first, and then, in an almost liberating passage, abstract signs, psychic investigation of forms, shreds of memory and color.

And within this horizon, panorama, space, soil, the territory is multiplied by stories of which illegible traces sometimes remain, that memory erases, or which must be discarded to make room for the new.

Being in the world, recognizing the existence of others therefore means recognizing the landscape first and foremost, to know that it is not a simple backdrop, of the fifth that delimits the space of human action.

From the more defined forms of the section of the exhibition dedicated to Francabandera's interventions on postcards, creative core that dates back to 2021, we move on to an increasingly free elaboration of signs and traces evidenced by the most recent works, where the task of reconstructing the landscape passes to the observer, in whose gaze the artistic work is always completed, to give shape and image to something that is already in its inner space.

At the same time this gaze, swinging between corrupted shreds of past memories as they move towards an informal sign system becomes a discovery, an invention and a discovery.

Francabandera's intention with Mindscapes and Postcards is therefore to allow everyone to recognize and recognize themselves in those signs, looking for a familiar place, a natural trace, the veins of a leaf, the depth of a memory.

To have any hope of being ourselves, we must have many places within us. This thought of Jean Bertrand Pontalis reported by Vittorio Lingiardi in his beautiful essay MindscapesPsiche nel paesaggio, teaches first of all that our history and our psyche are also a geography: we are inseparable from our places, out of love or resentment.

Furthermore it explains that our place is never just one We must have many places inside.
